Statement of Clarification Regarding ONAC and NAC
ONAC and NAC
We would like to provide a clarification statement regarding Oklevueha Native American Church (ONAC) and Native American Church (NAC). Although both organizations have similar origins and foundations, it is important to note that they are two separate and distinct churches with their unique visions and missions.
Oklevueha Native American Church (ONAC) was founded by James Warren ‘Flaming Eagle’ Mooney and Linda Mooney in 1997. Through years of sacrifice and a deep commitment to the work, ONAC was recognized by the Federal government as a bona fide Native American Church. Oklevueha holds the blessing from the Elders and recognition by legal authorities.
Native American Church (NAC), recently founded by James Warren ‘Flaming Eagle’ Mooney, has been established as a parallel but separate institution to Oklevueha Native American Church (ONAC), representing a significant historical connection.
It is crucial to note that NAC mentioned here should not be confused with the greater national Native American Church. NAC, in this context, is a separate and distinct church with its own identity and aspirations.
We want to emphasize that Oklevueha Native American Church (ONAC) and Native American Church (NAC) operate independently, each with its own values, goals, and mission. Therefore, membership in one church does not mean membership in the other. They are two separate and distinct churches.
Linda Mooney, Co-founder, President, and Elder Matriarch of Oklevueha Native American Church continues to preside over ONAC – Oklevueha Native American Church and is supported by the Council of Advisors and Council of Matriarchs. Oklevueha will continue forward with her mission and vision, to bring the sacred ceremonies of the Indigenous peoples to those who seek this way of connection and healing.
James Mooney, Co-founder of ONAC, retired from active leadership in Oklevueha Native American Church several years ago. However, he currently serves as the presiding elder for NAC, fulfilling his vision and mission to unite Indigenous communities worldwide and work together to ensure that every tribe and individual can fully exercise their rights under U.S. law. NAC will also be overseeing all sacred medicine cultivation.
The following statement is meant to provide a clear understanding of the individual characteristics and paths of Oklevueha Native American Church and Native American Church. Both churches are independent institutions, working in solidarity.
