The Seven Core Values of Oklevueha Native American Church

GRATITUDE

Gratitude

Gratitude is to feel appreciation for the gifts we are given and the blessings that come from the efforts of others. Gratitude is also the recognition and expression of appreciation to Great Creator and to those around us. Gratitude is a daily, moment-by-moment practice, wherein we give thanks to Creator for all that we have and are.

Acknowleding a state of gratitude can literally rewire your brain. Mental health experts are studying the effects of gratitude, and the results are astounding. Psychologists find that, over time, feeling grateful boosts happiness and fosters both physical and psychological health, even among those already struggling with mental health problems. Studies show that practicing gratitude curbs the use of words expressing negative emotions and shifts inner attention away from such negative emotions as resentment and envy, minimizing the possibility of ruminating, which is a hallmark of depression.

From a spiritual perspective, cultivating a gratitude practice can bring us into deeper connection with Creator, Mother Earth, and all the Divine beings who assist us. Our hearts will open, and we will be able to see the majesty of Creator’s plan, and as we develop deeper and deeper gratitude, our awareness of blessings and miracles will increase.

Gratitude is one of Oklevueha’s Seven Guiding Principles.
